Creative Arts does not process nor give out badges.

Create different greeting cards using the Japanese Kawaii cartoon style (like Hello Kitty).

Morning Session: Art in Nature
Illustrate plants, animals, insects, life cycles, food webs, or entire ecosystems by using principles of art & design and learning to make careful observations.

Learn to think in 3D by using your imagination to create artwork in-the-round!

Create buildings, gardens and structural sculptures using your imagination and different materials while learning about famous architects.

2010 THEATRE CAMPS, MUSICALS & TV ACTING CAMPS
All students must have completed kindergarten in order to participate in all Theatre camps. All Theatre camps will be held at the Union Congregational Church, 148 Haverhill Street, North Reading, unless otherwise noted.* Time for all Theatre camps will be 8:15 a.m.-5:45 p.m., unless otherwise noted.** No previous acting, singing or artistic experience are required for any of these camps. All students have speaking roles, unless otherwise noted.***

JUNE 28-JULY 2 – Workshops at First Cong. Church, Reading Location
Workshop Tuition (June 25-July 2 only): mornings $32 per day or $155 for full week of mornings only; afternoons $38 per day or $185 for the full week of afernoons; full day $60 per day or $285 for the full week

Workshops are specifically designed to incorporate beginner, intermediate and advanced theatre students and are perfect for students interested but apprehensive about learning acting skills. Workshops are intended for the students to 'mix-and-match' with art and theatre. Please note curriculum is subject to change.
Monday Morning: Acting Through Games
Learn all aspects of theatre including reading and analyzing a script. Have fun while enhancing stage presence, articulation, reading comprehension and memorization skills through fun and hilarious theatre games.
Monday Afternoon: Puppet Theatre
Use puppets as a tool to work on character development, pantomime, vocalization and team work while performing short scenes in groups. Students also create their own hand puppet!
Tuesday Morning: Use Your Imagination
This workshop explores pantomime (communicating without talking), an important skill for acting, through fun and imaginative games. Students are prompted to use their imagination to pantomime scenes or short skits.
Tuesday Afternoon: Story Play
Students work together in groups to study, rehearse and perform short scenes from favorite fables, fairy tales or children’s stories while learning to follow a script.
Wednesday Morning: Character Study
This is an intensive study in character development for young actors. Through games and scenes work, students learn how to their own unique abilities, past experiences and motivations to create different characters.
Wednesday Afternoon: Acting 102
Learn or review using props and costumes to enhance character development in different scenes and skits. Students are expected to understand and build upon basic theatre skills through fun games and skits. Auditioning, pantomime and greater character study are some of the skills covered in this intermediate class.
Thursday Morning: Musical Theatre Dance Basics
Learn basic dance steps choreography commonly used in Creative Arts musical theatre programs. An essential workshop for students interested in taking summer mini and big musicals!
Thursday Afternoon: Director for an Afternoon
Gain a deeper understanding of theatre by working in groups to write, act and direct short scenes!
Friday Morning: Scene Study
Improve stage presence, pantomime and character development through acting in and analyzing short scenes. Students work together in small and large groups to perform short scenes with props and costumes.
Friday Afternoon: Fun with Improv
Unscripted, improvised acting! Learn to listen and observe other actors. This workshop is designed to encourage building a character through a thought process of emotions and reactions through fun games, short scenes and hilarious skits!

Each week will culminate in a student art exhibit creating a display of the students work from the whole week. Feel free to invite family & friends to share in your child's pride! Show times are: 11:30 a.m. – noon for the morning students.

Students build sculptures to create unique and interesting shadow designs or scenes. Artists followed: Tim Noble & Sue Webster or similar artists
Tuesday
Morning: Positive & Negative Space
Create statement sculptural pieces by using positive and negative space, balance and other principles of design. Artists followed: Damon Hyldreth or similar artist.
Wednesday Morning: Recycled Artwork/Animal Homage
Utilizing recycled materials students use imagination and principles of art & design to construct animals and other organic forms. Artists followed: Robert Rauschenberg and Brian Jungen or similar artists.
Thursday Morning: Movable Forms
These sculptures move! Although the majority of sculpture is static, many artists incorporate movable features to make dramatic statements…or just for fun. What will you create?! Artists followed: Alexander Calder and Arthur Ganson or similar artists.
Friday Morning: Architectural & Environmental Sculpture
Some sculptors alter buildings, create massive sculptures, or transform landscapes. In this workshop, students study artists like Maya Lin and Robert Smithson (or similar artists) to build structural and organic 3D artwork using principles of art & design.
Session II: July 5 – 9
Mini-Masters Art Camp: Story Book Art
In this class we will read different children’s’ stories to create story inspired artwork while learning to work with different media. Follow the tales and artistic styles of Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle, Maurice Sendak, Beatrix Potter, Marc Brown and others. Songs, games and music are also incorporated into camp. Art show on the last day, and please remember to dress for the mess!
Session III: July 12 – 16
Mini-Masters Art Camp: Mixed-Bag Media
Mixed media combines traditional media (ink, charcoal or pencil, paint, clay) with collage or 3D designs to create unique artwork. It's a great opportunity to experiment with a variety of techniques and materials to stimulate creativity and self expression. Students work with paint, plaster, different papers, etc. to create engaging and fun projects. Children’s books, songs, games and music are also incorporated into camp. Art show on the last day, and please remember to dress for the mess!
Session IV: July 19 – 23
Mini-Masters Art Camp: Art Around the World
Become a world traveler by learning about art in different countries and cultures around the world. Create projects based on each visited country while exploring different media and materials! Construct a family totem poll, African ceremonial mask, Aboriginal dot art, Southwest Native American sand paintings and Japanese prints. Children’s books, songs, games and music are also incorporated into camp. Art show on the last day, and please remember to dress for the mess!
Session V: July 26 – 30
Mini-Masters Art Camp: Art in the Garden
Learn all about plant and animal life found in gardens while learning to carefully observe the natural world. Students create a nature sketch book, draw, paint and sculpt different animals, insects & plants and learn to plant a seed. What will grow in your garden? Children’s books, songs, games and music are also incorporated into camp. Art show on the last day of camp. Please remember to dress for the mess.
Session VI: August 2 – 6
Mini-Masters Art Camp: People, Places & Things
In this camp, students interpret the world around them through perspective, portrait, figure drawing and working from still life. From creating cities to drawing each other, students explore different mediums and materials from pencils and paint to collage and clay. Children’s books, songs, games and music are also incorporated into camp. Art show on the last day of camp. Please remember to dress for the mess!
Session VII: August 9 – 13
Mini-Masters Art Camp: Little Artists, BIG Art
Students continue their artistic exploration by experimenting with different techniques like painting, drawing, collage, sculpting, and printmaking while learning about a different artist each day! Children’s books, songs, games and music are also incorporated into camp. Art show on the last day of camp. Please remember to dress for the mess!
Session VIII: August 16 – 20
Mini-Masters Art Camp: Puppets, Puppets, Puppets!
It’s a puppet world! Learn about different types of puppets and make several of your own. Create unique characters to explore imagination, self expression and encourage creative play. Children’s books, songs, games and music are also incorporated into camp. Art show on the last day of camp. Please remember to dress for the mess!

Art Adventure (Afternoon Session): Illustration Studio Workshops
Monday Afternoon: Drawing Faces & Expressions
Students learn to draw faces and different expressions to illustrate short stories without using dialogue.
Tuesday Afternoon: Creating Characters
Drawing human and animals forms are essential for illustrating comic characters. Using each other as models, students practice basic figure drawing skills to illustrate characters in different scenes and action poses. Students also learn to draw fabric draping and clothing.
Wednesday Afternoon: Creating Story Boards
Story boards are used in movies, animated features, comics and graphic novels to ‘map’ story lines. This workshop explores basic story board development to transform a written story into a graphic representation.
Thursday Afternoon: Layout & Design
Learn basic landscape and perspective drawing skills to illustrate different settings. Learn when to use splash and character action pages plus determine design and set tone for illustrating and writing a short graphic story or comic strip.
Friday Afternoon: Comic Books
Transform written stories or your daily life into a comic strip or graphic story using different layouts, scenes and characters while experimenting with ink, colored pencils and watercolors.
Session II: July 5 – 9
Art Adventure (Morning Session): Clay Mania!
Unleash your creativity by sculpting, shaping and molding clay! Working with clay has many benefits including building muscle strength, dexterity, tactile sensory perception and hand-eye coordination. Through unique projects, students convert imagination into reality to learn self expression, creative problem solving and social skills. Pottery wheel demonstration included. Please note pottery may break during the firing process. Art show on the last day of camp. Please remember to dress for the mess!
Art Adventures (Afternoon Session): Paperworks
Fold, cut, glue, shape! Construct unique sculptural works of art using paper, imagination and creativity. Make your own paper, fold books, cards and other fun paper-related projects. Learn about artists using paper as their medium of choice. What will you create? Art show on the last day of camp. Please remember to dress for the mess!
Session III: July 12 – 16

Myths and legends are stories told by different cultures to explain natural occurrences. Fantasies are dreams limited only by the imagination. Session IV: July 19 – 23
Art Adventure (Morning Session): Art Discoveries
Looking for a way to artistically express ideas? Learn how artists use certain colors, textures, media and materials to express feelings and ideas with fun and innovative projects. This is your chance to explore 2D and 3D media. Art show on the last day of camp. Please remember to dress for the mess!
Art Adventure (Afternoon Session): Art in Nature
Illustrate the natural world through careful observations and hands-on exploration. Make a natural journal and learn to visually record observations by using different sketching techniques, color mixing, shading, value and other drawing & painting skills. Collect and visually interpret natural history specimens. Weather permitting, students will visit local parks to sketch and collect. Art show on the last day of camp. Please remember to dress for the mess!
Session V: July 26 – 30
Art Adventure (Morning Session): Art in Different Cultures

Transform written word into colorful illustrations. Write a short story and, by learning different drawing techniques, bring it to life through illustration!
