2010 THEATRE CAMPS, MUSICALS & TV ACTING CAMPS
All students must have completed kindergarten in order to participate in all Theatre camps. All Theatre camps will be held at the Union Congregational Church, 148 Haverhill Street, North Reading, unless otherwise noted.* Time for all Theatre camps will be 8:15 a.m.-5:45 p.m., unless otherwise noted.** No previous acting, singing or artistic experience are required for any of these camps. All students have speaking roles, unless otherwise noted.***

2010 MINI-MASTERS ART & ART ADVENTURE CAMPS
Each camp is one week long, M-F, with an art show on Friday. (Workshop weeks do not have an art show.) Camp themes change weekly and are age-specific. All Art Activities are at Creative Arts, 25 Woburn St., Inside the First Cong. Church, Reading.
Morning: 8:30 a.m.-noon ($155/wk) - Mini Art or Art Adventure
Afternoon: 1:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. ($185/wk) - Art Adventure only
All Day: 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. ($295/wk) - Art Adventure only

It is recommended that students dress for mess or bring a large art shirt to wear. Smocks are available, but still be prepared for mess.
Art Show!
Each week-long camp will culminate in a student art exhibit creating a display of the students work from the whole week. Feel free to invite family & friends to share in your child's pride! Show times are: 11:30 a.m. – noon for the morning half-day students or 5:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. for the afternoon and all-day students.

Learn all about plant and animal life found in gardens while learning to carefully observe the natural world. Students create a nature sketch book, draw, paint and sculpt different animals, insects & plants and learn to plant a seed. What will grow in your garden? Art Adventure (Morning Session): Art in Different Cultures
Become a world traveler by learning about art in different countries and cultures. Create projects based on each visited country while exploring different media and materials! Construct a family totem poll, African ceremonial mask, Aboriginal dot art painting, Southwest Native American sand paintings and Japanese prints. Art show on the last day. Please remember to dress for the mess!

Art Adventure (Afternoon Session): Architectural Sculpture
Some sculptors alter buildings, create massive sculptures, or transform landscapes. Become an architectural sculptor for the week by building structural and organic 3D artwork using principles of art and design. Look at work by different artists working in 3D. Learn to use light and shadow, positive & negative space, recycled material and other techniques and materials to build masterpieces. Art show on the last day. Please remember to dress for the mess!

In this camp, students interpret the world around them through perspective, portrait, figure drawing and working from still life. From creating cities to drawing each other, students explore different mediums and materials from pencils and paint to collage and clay. Art Adventure (Morning Session): Masters & Media
Explore 2D & 3D media by learning drawing, painting and sculpting techniques with fun and inspiring projects. Artistic Masters are used to illustrate different art forms. Along with other famous artists, students will focus on Singer-Sargent to study portraiture; Vermeer to discuss light and story-telling and Seurat to demonstrate painting landscapes. Art show on the last day. Please remember to dress for the mess!

Art Adventure (Afternoon Session): Story Book Illustration
Transform written word into colorful illustrations. Write a short story and, by learning different drawing techniques, bring it to life through illustration! Create characters, scenes, different layouts and styles incorporating principles of art and design. Look at works by favorite childrens’ book illustrators like Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle, Maurice Sendak, Thomas Locker and others for inspiration. Art show on the last day. Explore portrait drawing and your own artistic style by learning to draw faces from observation. Study different artists like Rembrandt or Mary Cassatt to discover why faces inspire them!
Monday Afternoon: Tiles & Mosaics
Use a variety of objects and patterns to create tiles, inspired by ancient Greek and Roman mosaic art, for your garden.
Tuesday Morning: Color & Emotion
What color is happy? Believe it or not, artists are inspired by and use color to express emotions! Experiment with color to create unique artwork. Study works by Matisse and Edward Mell. How will color inspire you?
Tuesday Afternoon: Prints & Designs
Create different projects using prints made with objects found in nature. Learn printmaking techniques to create animal collages.
Wednesday Morning: Your Backyard
Become scientific illustrators! Illustrate plants, animals, insects, life cycles, food webs, or entire ecosystems by using principles of art & design. Use artists like Maria Sybilla Merian and John James Audubon for inspiration.
Wednesday Afternoon: In the Garden
Use recycled objects to create an entire garden ecosystem from bugs to blooming flowers!
Thursday Morning: Pattern, Texture & Shape
Using imaginative projects learn why pattern, texture and shape are important artistic elements. Study works by Kandinsky, Mondrian and Van Gogh.
Thursday Afternoon: Mobiles & Stabiles
Did you know that sculptures can move? Learn about design, balance and shape by creating unique kinetic mobiles & stabiles. Use artists like Alexander Calder for inspiration!
Friday Morning: The Masters
Students learn how to look at and appreciate art by viewing iconic works. Apply the fundamentals of art and design to create a twist on famous works!
Friday Afternoon: Paper Making
Rip! Blend! Pulp! Mold! Make your own paper for bookmarks, stationary, journals, you name it!
Session VIII: August 16 – 20
Mini-Masters Art Camp: Puppets, Puppets, Puppets!
It’s a puppet world! Learn about different types of puppets and make several of your own. Create unique characters to explore imagination, self expression and encourage creative play. Monday Morning: Drawing Light
What is chiaroscuro? How do artists 'draw' light?! Learn to use light and shadow to create depth, volume and drama in your artwork. Students will also study works by Vermeer and other similar artists
Monday Afternoon: Mini Masterpieces
Artists have trading cards, too! ATC, Artists Trading Cards, is a new artistic movement where artists create and trade mini masterpieces! As artists, students will create their own trading cards using mixed media.
Tuesday
Morning: If Paint Could Talk ….
What would it say? Artwork is another way to tell a story or communicate and idea. Students explore different artists and artwork to see what their paintings say before creating artwork of their own using different paint media and techniques. What will you say with paint?
Tuesday Afternoon: Mixed Media – Sculpted Collage
Using different materials and mediums from acrylic paint to zippers, students create 3D sculptures to make statements or tell stories. A variety of artists and their artwork are also explored.
Wednesday
Morning: Memory Boxes
Transform a dull box into a work of art! Use paint, collage, fabric or other materials to create a personal memory box.
Wednesday Afternoon: Scrap-Tastic!
Use mixed-media to turn ordinary pages into a photo-log work of art! Bring your favorite photos! Pages will be 6"x6" or 12"x12".
Thursday
Morning: Wanna Fling Paint?
Why is modern art so weird? It's all about creating an emotional response. Explore different modern and abstract artists like Jackson Pollack and learn about their inspirations. Use color, texture and shape to say something about your life, emotions, imagination, nature or other inspirations!
Thursday Afternoon: Stuffies
Design, sew, decorate and stuff an stuffed animal of your creation! You are only limited by your imagination!
Friday Morning: Marbling Mayhem!
Convert blank, colorless paper into dramatic works of art using marbling technique! Convert marbleized paper and fabric into books, bookmarks and more in this fun workshop! Crazy patterns and colors encouraged!
Friday Afternoon: Let’s Stab A Book!
In this fun workshop, students make books using the Japanese stab bound book technique. Each student will design, create and sew a book by hand! Books can be used for sketching, journals or mini scrap books.

Alcyon Summer Music
Chamber Music Workshop for String, Woodwind, Brass and Piano Students Ages 7-18. Alcyon Summer Music is run by the Alcyon Chamber Ensemble, in residence at Creative Arts. Our goal of engaging young artists in chamber music is achieved through in-depth musical
study. Yoga, singing, theory and improvisation center the mind, empower the spirit, enhance the relationship to our instrument, advance musical literacy, and help us find our own voice.

Build and Play Kalimba
Students will build and learn to play their very own kalimba! Native Africans made this kind of instrument from gourds with cane prongs, but we will build a much more durable and clear sounding thumb piano from a kit. Until the student's kalimba is constructed we will use one from the instructor's collection to begin learning how to play. Tuition includes one-on-one instruction an all necessary building materials.

Blues and Boogie-woogie Piano
Students will learn 12-bar blues, blues scales, and boogie-woogie patterns. Focus will be on ear-training, improvisation, and fun! This is a great way to keep piano skills honed over the summer for those students who would like a break from reading classical repertoire.

Parent Studio
This course is for parents who want to keep up with their kids’ progress or for adults who want to retrieve the piano skills from their childhood lessons. Music is for all ages!!

Musical Discoveries
Students will explore the sounds and structure of both traditional and unconventional instruments while being exposed to a diverse musical repertoire. Instruments may include marimba, hammered dulcimer, Appalachian dulcimer, guitar, harmonica, mandolin, tone drum, steel drum, etc.

Piano Technique
This course will focus on technical exercises – no reading, no assignments, just a technical workout including scales, Fast Five, trills and tremolos, glissandos, Spider, Butterfly, Hanon patterns, Dohnany exercises, triplet exercise, dynamics exercise, etc.

Holistic Vocals Master Class
Geared towards the more accomplished singers who is already well-versed in their craft and wants to be able to see the world around them through new eyes. Music Theory for the Contemporary Musician

Acoustic Lounge
For all instruments. Work together as a group to perform Rock, Punk or Pop songs. We will play the latest music, have fun and sound like a professional band! Contemporary A Cappella Group
For singers ages 8 and up. Students will learn how to work as a group and sing close-harmony and dissonance to the tune of modern music.
